John Muir- Humans I Admire

“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”

This dude is so badass.

John Muir is considered the archetype of our oneness with earth.  He was the first to make such tremendous triumphs in environmental appreciation and preservation with the immensely beautiful natural world as his sole muse. Muir was a sailor, a botanist, a writer and most of all, a fearless explorer.  He was the Yosemite Mountain King.. The Wilderness Prophet.. The Citizen of the Universe.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”

John Muir inspired and created alongside extraordinary leaders and artistic geniuses including Teddy Roosevelt, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Ansel Adams. Back in the day (1892), Muir founded the Sierra Club which still stands today as one of the most important grassroots environmental organizations in the good ole US of A.  They explore, enjoy and protect the planet.  You can be awesome too and get involved with the Sierra Club here.

“The grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never dried all at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls. ”

The RADness in Muir’s legacy still holds relevant today in schools, parks, monuments and of course, the John Muir Trail… 211 miles of pristine Northern Californian wilderness.  This trail, my friends, is definitely on my list of awesome things to do before I die. I’ve conquered the Tetons and no doubt I WILL conquer this!

“Wander a whole summer if you can. Time will not be taken from the sum of life. Instead of shortening, it will definitely lengthen it and make you truly immortal.”

John Muir’s contributions to the appreciation, respect and preservation of this earth are untethered and I am so grateful for the work and passion of this incredible, insanely awesome human being. Good lookin’ out, John!

“The mountains are calling and I must go.”

MILE… MILE & A HALF (trailer 2) from The Muir Project on Vimeo.

“When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with all other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.”

My hero, my fellow Scotsman, traipser of me beloved Sierras, I like the way he saw.
I’m hiking the entire John Muir Trail this summer to be with his spirt, and the spirits of the Paiute spirit dancers.
